Questions

Can Hermes work with an Obsidian vault or my own markdown notes?

Yes. The bundled Obsidian skill lets the agent read, search, create and edit notes and add wikilinks. Set OBSIDIAN_VAULT_PATH in your .env to the vault's folder (otherwise it tries ~/Documents/Obsidian Vault). Any folder of markdown files works the same way through the file tools.

A useful pattern: have it take notes in the vault as it works, then in a later session ask it to continue a topic, and it searches the vault. Keep short durable facts (like where the vault is) in memory and longer material in notes.

The bundled llm-wiki skill builds and queries an interlinked markdown knowledge base, and the plugin catalog lists a community dashboard plugin for browsing a vault.

Can Hermes read ebooks, PDFs and scanned documents? Are big files loaded whole?

Yes. Its file reader converts Word, Excel, PDF, EPUB, RTF, OpenDocument and older Office files to text (PDF, EPUB and the others need a converter that installs on first use). Files are read in pages, not loaded whole, and documents over 50 MB are refused.

PDF conversion reads only the text layer, so scanned pages come out empty. When a big share of pages has no text, Hermes warns and lists the empty page ranges, then can render a few pages as images for its vision tool, or follow the bundled pdf skill's OCR guide (marker-pdf) for many pages.

For long books, ask for focused work (a chapter, a summary per section) rather than everything at once, so the context window isn't flooded.

Can Hermes use Firefox or my own Chrome profile for browsing?

Chrome-family, yes. Set browser.use_real_profile: true and Hermes copies your active Chrome, Edge, Brave or Chromium profile (cookies and logins) into a separate snapshot and browses with it, so you stay signed in; browser.real_profile_pin: "Profile 2" picks a specific profile. In Desktop it's a toggle under Capabilities > Tools > Browser. Your live profile is never opened directly.

Or connect to a browser you launched yourself with a debug port: run /browser connect in the CLI. Chrome 136 and later need a separate --user-data-dir for this.

Firefox isn't supported for real-profile browsing; with Firefox as your default you get a fresh browser and a message saying so. The Camofox option is Firefox-based, but it's a separate self-hosted anti-detection browser, not your own Firefox.
