# Hermes Agent terminal can't find files or programs

> Check where the command actually runs, then verify paths and dependencies inside that environment.

Basis: Explained from the official Hermes Agent docs and repository (Nous Research). Steps follow the linked official sources.

## Identify the actual execution environment

Record the selected terminal backend, working directory, account and exact failing path or executable. Hermes can execute terminal work locally or through another environment. A file visible in your desktop file manager may be absent from a container or remote host. Start with a read-only identity and directory check inside the same terminal tool that failed.

If the file exists there, inspect the literal path, permissions and filename. If it does not, determine whether the workflow intended a mount, a copy or remote retrieval. Do not create an empty replacement file just to silence the error: that can let a later step produce a convincing but meaningless result.

## Check dependencies without changing the whole system

For a missing executable, inspect the command resolution and version in that environment. Compare the service's environment with your interactive shell rather than assuming they share a PATH. The tools guide also notes that non-interactive shell startup can behave differently from a normal terminal. Retain the first meaningful error and the smallest command that reproduces it.

Install or repair dependencies only through the supported method for that deployment, once the missing component is identified. Keep existing project files and configuration intact. Repeat the original read-only check, then run the smallest useful task before restarting a large workflow. Record where the resulting artifact was actually saved.

## Expected result and limits

Success means the intended execution environment can open the required input, resolve the required program and produce an inspectable output. It does not establish that files persist across container replacement or host restart. Backend behavior and installation ownership vary, so consult the current platform and backend documentation before migrating files or changing runtime installation.
