### .env file

The file in your Hermes home (~/.hermes/.env) that stores API keys and tokens such as TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN. It holds credentials, not memory.

Sources: [FAQ & Troubleshooting](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/reference/faq), [Persistent Memory](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/memory)

### /goal

A standing goal Hermes keeps working toward across turns. After each turn a judge model decides whether it's done, and if not Hermes continues, up to a budget of 20 turns by default (`goals.max_turns`).

Sources: [Slash Commands Reference](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/reference/slash-commands)

### /steer

A slash command that hands the running agent a note after its next tool call, changing direction without interrupting the task or starting a new turn.

Sources: [Slash Commands Reference](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/reference/slash-commands)

### ACP (Agent Client Protocol)

A JSON-RPC-over-stdio protocol spoken by editors such as VS Code, Zed and JetBrains. `hermes acp` runs Hermes as an ACP server so it can work inside those editors.

Sources: [ACP Host Integration](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/acp), [Programmatic Integration](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/developer-guide/programmatic-integration)

### AGENTS.md

Hermes' built-in WhatsApp connection, which emulates a WhatsApp Web session paired by QR code rather than using the official Business API.

Sources: [WhatsApp](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/messaging/whatsapp)

### Bot Chat

A profile's canonical chat session with its own bot. The `bot-chat` cron delivery target posts output into it as an incoming message so the bot acts on it, costing one full agent turn per delivery.

Sources: [Scheduled Tasks (Cron)](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/cron)

### Checkpoints / rollback

An opt-in feature (hermes chat --checkpoints) that snapshots your project before destructive operations so you can restore it with /rollback.

Sources: [Checkpoints and /rollback](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/checkpoints-and-rollback)

### command_allowlist

The config.yaml list of command patterns you've permanently approved, so Hermes runs them without asking.

Sources: [Security](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/security)

### config.yaml

The main settings file in your Hermes home. It holds the model, terminal backend, memory, approvals, MCP servers, display options and more, and you can edit it directly or use hermes config set.

Sources: [Configuration](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/configuration), [FAQ & Troubleshooting](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/reference/faq)

### Fallback providers

Backup provider and model pairs Hermes switches to automatically when your main model fails.

Sources: [Fallback Providers](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/fallback-providers)

### Frozen snapshot

How memory is loaded: it's read once into the system prompt when a session starts and doesn't change mid-session. That preserves the prompt cache but means new memories appear in the next session.

Sources: [Persistent Memory](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/memory)

### Hardline blocklist

Sources: [Skills System](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/skills)

### Prompt caching

Reuse of an unchanged conversation prefix so repeated input is billed more cheaply. Hermes enables it automatically for Claude models via Anthropic or OpenRouter and avoids rebuilding the system prompt mid-conversation, while a `/model` switch resets the cache.

Sources: [Context Compression and Caching](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/developer-guide/context-compression-and-caching), [FAQ & Troubleshooting](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/reference/faq)

A Telegram bot setting, on by default, that hides ordinary group messages from bots. Turn it off in @BotFather and re-add the bot, or make the bot a group admin, so Hermes can see group chat.

Sources: [Telegram](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/messaging/telegram)

### Terminal backend

Where the agent's shell commands run: local, docker, ssh, singularity, modal, daytona or vercel_sandbox. It's set with terminal.backend.

Sources: [Tools & Toolsets](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/tools)

Sources: [Persistent Memory](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/memory)

### wakeAgent gate

A way for a cron job's pre-check script to skip the agent: if the script's last stdout line is `{"wakeAgent": false}`, that run spends no LLM tokens. Leaving it out means the agent runs as usual.

Sources: [Scheduled Tasks (Cron)](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-guide/features/cron)
